Definition of Welding Engineer


Welding Engineer is the person that follows welding activities of various items (pipelines, platforms, ships and various structures) related to the oil and gas industry.


Main duties performed by Welding Engineer


  • To become familiar with and to maintain awareness of current Corporate/Department requirements and where applicable, the latest industry codes and standards including statutory rules and regulations;
  • To provide technical expertise on all welding matters as required corporately or on projects;
  • Assist and support project teams on all welding matters. Prepare project welding and NDT procedures. Advise on coating and materials issues where possible;
  • Prepare welding procedures for assigned project;
  • Liaise with prospective clients to promote welding technology and capability;
  • Review clients' specifications and scopes of work, examine pipe metallurgy and prepare detailed weld procedures to achieve maximum welding productivity in accordance with specified quality;
  • Preparation of technical qualifications/queries related to welding
  • Estimation of the welding cycle time;
  • Review subcontractors' tender documents and technical qualifications. Assist QHSE Department on subcontractor assessments/audits. Review and approve subcontractors' welding submissions;
  • Administer systems for the qualification of weld procedures and welders;
  • Ensure that subcontractors' welding procedures comply with the relevant specifications, codes and standards;
  • Ensure that records are maintained for all welding activities to demonstrate achievement of client requirements. Prepare visit, technical and project close out reports. Maintain departmental project welding files so that information is readily available to other department members. Complete departmental project close-out reports;
  • Liaise with the barge personnel and assist in optimizing work methods and trouble shooting where and when required;
  • Monitor laybarge progress to identify opportunities for improvement;
  • Review journals and technical papers for new welding technology. Maintain contact with welding equipment suppliers and consumable vendors to promote advances in welding technology;
  • Assist research and development programs;


Locations of the work of Welding Engineer:


The work of Welding Engineer is carried out primarily in offices at the location of employment of Welding Engineer. Welding Engineer will travel to other offices, Subcontractors facilities and on board pipe lay vessels located worldwide when necessary.
