Test Automation Specialist - GNSS & Space Technologies

Location: Ispra, Italy (On-site). Job type: Permanent or Freelance options considered. Contract: Long-term European Commission project, initial contract duration 1 year.

About the Opportunity

This is a unique opportunity to join one of Europe's most advanced research and testing environments supporting technologies such as: Galileo, EGNOS, LEO-PNT, Hybrid Navigation Systems, Next-generation Positioning, Navigation & Timing solutions.

You will contribute to testing, validation and automation activities within cutting-edge laboratory facilities dedicated to space, connectivity and emerging technologies. The role combines software development, laboratory automation, instrumentation management, data analysis and GNSS technologies within a highly international and multidisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities

Test Automation & Software Development

  • Develop automation tools for laboratory testing activities
  • Build and maintain software for managing scientific instrumentation
  • Create and execute test vectors for navigation and positioning projects
  • Develop solutions using Python and MATLAB

Laboratory & Instrumentation Support

  • Operate and manage advanced laboratory equipment including:
    • Spectrum analysers
    • Oscilloscopes
    • Signal generators
    • SDR platforms
    • GNSS receivers and simulators
    • Timing and synchronization systems

Data Analysis & Validation

  • Analyse experimental results and performance metrics
  • Create data visualisation dashboards and reports
  • Support testing and validation campaigns for European navigation programmes

Infrastructure & Network Support

  • Support laboratory network administration
  • Contribute to laboratory maintenance and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Assist in the deployment and operation of technical environments

Requirements

Essential

  • Degree in Telecommunications, Navigation, Geomatics, Engineering, Computer Science or similar
  • Strong Python and/or MATLAB development skills
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in:
    • Version control systems (Git or similar)
    • Data analysis and visualisation
    • Scientific or laboratory instrumentation
  • Familiarity with GNSS technologies and satellite navigation systems
  • Good knowledge of Linux environments
  • Strong English communication skills (B2+)

Nice to Have

  • Network administration experience
  • Embedded development or VHDL knowledge
  • SDR (Software Defined Radio) experience
  • Experience with AI tools and AI-assisted workflows
  • Knowledge of Galileo, EGNOS or positioning technologies
  • Additional European language
  • EU Security Clearance (or eligibility)
