Amazon’s Intelligent Cloud Hosting (ICON) Team is looking for a System Development Engineer to join our team in San José, Costa Rica.
Who are we? We host Amazon’s websites and the global marketplaces, partner portals, and consumer experiences such as Kindle, Alexa, Amazon Video, and the mobile application. We deliver the HTML and ensure all underlying transactions—payments, tax, contracts, returns, inventory, and notifications—are processed error‑free. In short, we perform cloud infrastructure management at the biggest scale in the known universe and we’re proud of it.

Our team has offices in Seattle, New York, Dublin, San José, Sydney, and Bangalore.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Operate almost everything in Linux and customize the environment to fit production needs.
- Design, implement, maintain, and deploy components that solve problems in a complex ecosystem—primarily using Python or Java.
- Apply networking fundamentals such as load balancers, switches, and routers.
- Develop strategic SRE toolkits built on AWS technology to deploy, monitor, and operate hundreds of thousands of services.
- Collaborate with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders, communicating complex ideas clearly.
- Leverage strong debugging and troubleshooting skills, and exhibit detail orientation and passion for delivering results.
- Self‑motivate and follow through on projects to ensure timely delivery.
About the Team
We own the routing layer built on AWS that connects traffic at low latency and protects web services against malicious robots and DDoS attacks. We abstract, centralize, and optimize infrastructure management from individual service teams and operate 120+ Tier‑1 services on behalf of the Worldwide Consumer organization.
Basic Qualifications
- 1+ years of DevOps or SysOps experience in a large‑scale software development environment.
- 1+ years of systems development experience.
- Knowledge of Linux fundamentals.
- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as C, C++, Java, or Perl.
- Experience with networking fundamentals, including load balancers, switches, routers, etc.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, effective with both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related discipline/experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of and proficiency in Python scripting.
- Understanding of best practices for software deployment.
- Experience with infrastructure management.
- Experience with eCommerce retail websites.
- Detail‑oriented, passionate, and able to deliver results.
