Project Engineer - Radioactive Waste Management (m/f/d)
Job location: Ispra, Italien. Reference number: 2025-1316. Working time: Vollzeit.
About the role As a Project Engineer in Nuclear Waste Management, you will support on-site activities at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, contributing to projects related to the characterisation, treatment and conditioning of radioactive waste within nuclear decommissioning programmes. Working directly at the JRC site, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists and nuclear specialists, supporting operational activities and helping to develop safe, compliant and efficient waste management solutions in accordance with European nuclear regulations.
Responsibilities
Reviewing technical proposals, project plans and operational concepts to support project execution.
Collecting and analysing project and radiological data to prepare status reports and recommendations for next steps.
Supporting and supervising waste management operations in controlled and classified areas.
Coordinating waste logistics and storage activities, including incoming, outgoing and internal waste movements.
Documenting waste packages and disposal containers according to radiological and material specifications.
Contributing to the characterisation, sorting and pre-treatment of historical radioactive waste.
Developing concepts for the treatment and conditioning of radioactive waste in accordance with international waste acceptance criteria.
Supporting investigations and treatment solutions for sludges, contaminated liquids and legacy waste streams.
Assisting with the remediation of contaminated areas and waste tracking within internal databases.
Qualifications
MSc in Nuclear Engineering, Radiation Protection, Nuclear Physics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related technical/scientific discipline.
3–5 years of professional experience in the nuclear sector, preferably in waste management, radiation protection or decommissioning.
Solid understanding of radiation protection principles and nuclear waste management practices.
Familiarity with European nuclear waste regulations and interest in Italian regulatory frameworks.
Experience with radiological characterisation methods, ideally including gamma spectrometry.
Strong analytical and data-driven approach.
Fluent English and Italian (spoken and written).
Very good knowledge of Italian is strongly preferred.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work in international and multidisciplinary project teams.
Open to join new upcoming projects on site.
Nice to have
Additional experience in nuclear waste processing, treatment or decommissioning projects.
Knowledge of mechanical or electrical maintenance in nuclear facilities.
Experience with PLC programming.
Familiarity with 2D/3D modelling software (e.g. AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Blender).
Experience working in international nuclear projects or abroad.
Professional development through trainings and courses.
Engineering activities with direct contact with nuclear operations on-field.
