Sr. Electrical Engineer, Data Center Engineering

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. You will join a diverse team of engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers to deliver high safety and security standards while providing scalable capacity at low cost.

Amazon Web Services is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to become part of a global engineering team, responsible for the implementation and technical evaluation of designs and the continuous innovation of our rapidly expanding data center footprint.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Conceive, initiate, and lead projects with widespread impact on infrastructure design, innovation and implementation.
  • Decompose complex problems into straightforward and actionable solutions.
  • Work with internal teams to understand user requirements and challenges.
  • Collaborate with teams or individuals from other disciplines, cultures and countries.
  • Escalate issues as required and communicate clearly and effectively at the appropriate level of detail with people from a wide range of technical abilities and backgrounds.
  • Produce clear and concise documentation such as detailed design specifications, white papers, wiring schematics and diagrams, and reports.
  • Understand and safeguard implementation of the Global Electrical Basis of Design (BoD) with constant auditing.
  • Drive standardization in data center electrical designs.
  • Develop strategic solutions that meet or exceed quality requirements and fall within budgetary requirements.
  • Capture requirements and turn aspirational company or customer goals into well‑defined, achievable and testable specifications and solutions.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to and during innovation and research and development projects.
  • Work with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify the appropriate electrical equipment.
  • Review and approve critical equipment submittals including vendor Witness Tests.
  • Provide technical support on global Large Scale Events (LSE’s), including participation on deep dives, investigations and recommendations on mitigation plans.
  • Work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
  • Maintain and host technical electrical forums to foster collaborative development of datacenter electrical systems.
  • Provide support and mentorship for the Data Center Engineering community.
  • Offer creative, out‑of‑the‑box solutions while having fun.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on controls engineering.
  • 8+ years of experience in industrial or commercial electrical design with 5+ years specific to mission‑critical experience.
  • Working knowledge of BIM and Revit.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience with industrial or commercial electrical design, 3+ years directly related to data center or mission‑critical facility design.
  • Excellent understanding of applicable regional electrical code (NEC, CEC, ETCI, NF C, etc.) and in‑depth knowledge of critical data center electrical equipment.
  • Controls experience and deep controls knowledge.
  • Experience managing supplier relationships in construction projects.
  • Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities and carry concepts through exploration, development, and deployment/construction.
  • Familiarity with medium voltage distribution systems design.
  • Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches.
  • Direct experience with the construction, operation, or maintenance of data centers, and basic understanding of mechanical equipment and system design.
  • Experience with fast‑track design/build projects and multiple large‑scale upgrade projects for large‑scale technical operations or compute farms.
  • Controls engineering expertise.
  • Fire alarm design experience.
