Software Engineer – Cloud & Energy Systems

Free2Move eSolutions ( a Stellantis company ( ready to become an international leader in the design, manufacture and supply of e-mobility products and services , is looking for Software Engineer with strong experience in Java (Spring Boot) , cloud architecture , and DevOps practices to join our energy systems engineering team.
You will design, develop, and maintain cloud-based software solutions that connect distributed energy resources (DERs), such as EV chargers and Virtual Power Plants (VPP), with grid services and energy management systems.
This role combines backend software development , system integration , and product engineering , supporting the deployment of scalable, secure, and high-performance V2G and energy control platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Software Development & Architecture
- Design and implement cloud-native applications and microservices using Java and Spring Boot .
- Develop APIs and data pipelines to integrate EVSE local controllers , energy management platforms , and VPP control systems .
- Implement secure, scalable solutions for real-time monitoring , control , and data exchange between edge devices and cloud services.
- Participate in full software product lifecycle — from requirements definition to deployment and maintenance.
- Write clean, maintainable, and testable code following best practices (CI/CD, unit/integration testing, documentation).
2. Cloud & DevOps
- Design and manage cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GCP) for scalable and resilient applications.
- Implement DevOps pipelines for automated testing, deployment, and monitoring (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD).
- Manage containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes .
- Integrate with IoT and messaging frameworks (MQTT, Kafka, AMQP) for distributed communication.
- Ensure system security, observability, and reliability using appropriate DevOps tools (Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, etc.).
3. Collaboration & Product Development
- Collaborate with System Engineers on architecture for V2G and VPP projects , ensuring smooth communication between hardware, firmware, and cloud components.
- Work closely with Product Managers to define technical requirements, prioritize features, and support product roadmaps.
- Contribute to proof-of-concept projects , pilots, and field testing for V2G and energy management solutions.
- Support system integration and testing with OCPP , ISO 15118 , and energy market APIs .
Qualifications & Skills:
Education:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering , or related fields.
Technical Skills:
- Proficient in Java (Spring Boot) for backend and microservice development.
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools for CI/CD, version control, and monitoring.
- Understanding of RESTful API design , event-driven systems , and message brokers .
- Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Familiarity with databases (SQL, NoSQL, Time-series) and data streaming systems.
- Exposure to IoT/energy systems communication protocols (OCPP, MQTT, Modbus, IEC 61850) is a plus.
- Knowledge of security principles in cloud and data systems (OAuth2, JWT, TLS, IAM).
Soft Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset.
- Excellent teamwork and cross-functional communication. Fluent Italian and English (French can be a plus)
- Ability to translate technical requirements into product features.
- Curious, proactive, and comfortable working in an agile environment.
Objectives of the Role (First 12 Months):
- Develop and deploy core cloud services to connect EVSEs and V2G controllers to the company’s VPP platform.
- Implement and optimize Spring Boot-based APIs for data exchange and control between devices and cloud.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation for product releases.
- Support the development and testing of a production-grade AC V2G system , integrating local and cloud control logic.
Preferred Experience:
- Prior work in energy systems , e-mobility , IoT , or smart grid applications .
- Experience with real-time or event-driven architectures .
- Familiarity with distributed systems, load balancing, and fault tolerance .
- Exposure to Agile/Scrum environments and product development cycles .
