SENIOR SPECIALIST – OPTICAL LASER & MECHANICAL DESIGN

WHAT YOU WANT TO KNOW

  • Location: North Vicenza, Italy
  • Permanent contract
  • Salary: €40,000 - €55,000 (flexibility available)
  • Hybrid flexibility depending on project phase
  • Working on advanced industrial 3D printing systems
  • Opportunity to develop across both laser optics and mechanical design
  • Key role within R&D bridging optical systems and machine integration

JOB DETAILS

This position sits within an R&D team developing next-generation industrial 3D printing systems, with a focus on laser-based technologies.

The role is centred around a key challenge in the business: ensuring that high-performance laser systems are not only designed effectively but also integrated reliably into complex industrial machines.

This is not a purely theoretical optics role nor a standalone mechanical design position. Instead, it sits at the intersection of both disciplines, focusing on how laser systems perform in real-world machine environments.

We are open to candidates coming from either a laser/optical background or a mechanical design background, provided there is an interest in developing across both areas.

You will act as a technical reference within the business for laser systems, while also contributing to the mechanical design, integration and optimisation of these systems within production platforms.

The role is highly hands-on, involving laboratory testing, prototyping, system redesign and close collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the design and optimisation of laser optical systems used in industrial platforms
  • Develop and refine optical paths, beam delivery systems and power management strategies
  • Contribute to mechanical design of laser modules, mounts, housings and alignment structures (CAD)
  • Work closely with mechanical engineers to ensure structural stability, thermal control and precision alignment
  • Troubleshoot and redesign optical-mechanical systems to improve efficiency, reliability and performance
  • Define testing procedures, validation protocols and quality standards for laser systems
  • Conduct hands-on laboratory testing and system calibration
  • Support continuous improvement of laser integration within production machines

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

  • Laser optical systems (design, optimisation, integration)
  • Mechanical design (CAD, precision components, structural design in complex systems)
  • Understanding of precision engineering principles such as tolerance stack-up, thermal behaviour and alignment sensitivity
  • Experience working on complex systems where multiple disciplines interact
  • Hands-on approach to testing, troubleshooting and system improvement
  • Ability to work cross-functionally within R&D and engineering teams
  • Fluent in English

DESIRABLE

  • Experience integrating laser systems into industrial equipment
  • Experience within additive manufacturing or high-precision machinery
  • Knowledge of laser scanning systems or beam shaping technologies
  • Experience with laboratory optical instrumentation and validation equipment
