Senior Professorship – Wilson E. Schmidt Distinguished Professorship

Senior Professorship at Johns Hopkins University in Bologna, EMI, IT. This Full time on site position offers great opportunities for career growth. The School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University is seeking to fill the Wilson E. Schmidt Distinguished Professorship at the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs (Kissinger Center).

The professorship was established to support a senior faculty member located in SAIS Europe in Bologna, Italy, working in collaboration with other members of the Kissinger Center to pursue its mission of historically informed statecraft and strategy.

Candidates with an interest in global affairs, international relations, diplomatic and military history, grand strategy, and efforts to bridge the gap between the worlds of scholarship and policy are encouraged to apply.

We are especially interested in candidates whose research and teaching focus on issues surrounding emerging technology.

Responsibilities

  • Teach graduate courses in the candidate's area of expertise.
  • Advise and mentor MA and PhD students, including capstone, thesis, and dissertation supervision.
  • Maintain an active program of research, writing, and public engagement appropriate to the appointment line—peer‑reviewed scholarship for tenure‑line appointments; substantial policy‑relevant scholarship, reports, testimony, or comparable public‑facing work for Professor of the Practice appointments.
  • Build and sustain partnerships with government agencies, international institutions, industry, and civil society organizations.
  • Participate in faculty governance and service.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant discipline.
  • A record of peer‑reviewed scholarship sufficient for a tenured appointment at a major research university.
  • Demonstrated excellence in graduate teaching.
  • Demonstrated capacity to bridge scholarship and practice.
  • A commitment to mentoring a diverse community of students.
  • Experience in government, international or non‑governmental organizations, and/or the private sector is viewed favorably.
  • Standing in the field commensurate with senior rank.

Salary and Benefits

Salary Range: The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training, and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.
