Senior Clinical Scientist, Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation (aDBS)

Location : Italy – Milan or United States – Remote (reporting to Newronika HQ, Milan, Italy).

Department: Clinical Affairs / Medical Affairs / R&D Clinical Strategy

Level: Senior, Individual Contributor

Travel: Approximately 20% (domestic and international)

Role Overview

Newronika is seeking a Senior Clinical Scientist to lead the scientific evaluation of new clinical applications for our adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation (aDBS) platform beyond Parkinson’s disease. This is a high-leverage individual contributor role for a Ph.D.-trained neuroscientist (or candidate with equivalent education and applied research experience) who can move fluently between primary literature, clinical reasoning, and product strategy. The successful candidate will form and pressure-test hypotheses about device efficacy in new indications, build the scientific foundation for future clinical development, and serve as an internal scientific resource across cross-functional teams.

You will work closely with Newronika leadership in Milan, engage with external KOLs and academic collaborators across the global DBS and neuromodulation community, and support Clinical Affairs, Medical Affairs, R&D, Regulatory, and Commercial in assessing the clinical rationale, evidence base, development feasibility, and strategic relevance of potential new indications.

Key Responsibilities

· Synthesize the global neuroscience literature, congress proceedings, ongoing trials, and competitive landscape across DBS, aDBS, BCI, pharmaceutical advancements, and broader neuromodulation.

· Conduct targeted literature reviews to identify candidate neural biomarkers (e.g., LFP, EEG, neurochemical, behavioral) for new indications, evaluating their feasibility as targets for closed-loop adaptive stimulation.

· Develop and document mechanistic hypotheses about the plausibility and projected efficacy of adaptive DBS in new indications, integrating insights from neurophysiology, circuit-level pathophysiology, and existing clinical evidence.

· Evaluate potential applications of DBS/aDBS beyond Parkinson’s disease, including movement disorders, severe neurological conditions and selected neurodegenerative diseases.

· Map consolidated, emerging and exploratory indications, assessing clinical rationale and level of evidence.

· Identify relevant KOLs, clinical centers, research groups and ongoing clinical studies.

· Prepare scientific summaries, landscape analyses, literature reviews and internal clinical-strategic reports.

· Support discussions with neurologists, neurosurgeons, researchers and scientific advisory boards.

· Support the Clinical Research and Medical Affairs teams in trial design, scientific protocol input, evidence-generation strategy, and publication planning as new indications mature toward clinical development.

· Contribute to the definition of a clinical-scientific roadmap for potential new indications.

Required Profile

· Ph.D. in neuroscience, neurology, biomedical engineering, or a closely related discipline is strongly preferred. Equivalent advanced education or substantive applied research experience in neurology, neurosurgery, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, or neuromodulation will also be considered.

· Experience in neurological, neurosurgical, neurophysiology, neuromodulation or neurotechnology environments.

· Knowledge of neurostimulation, neurosurgical devices or implantable neurological technologies.

· Ability to understand clinical workflows, patient pathways, implant procedures, follow-up and therapy management.

· Strong experience in critical review of scientific literature, clinical studies and clinical data.

· Ability to produce clear and structured scientific documents for management, clinical teams and technical teams.

· Analytical mindset, scientific rigor and ability to distinguish between established evidence, promising hypotheses and exploratory areas.

· Ability to interact effectively with senior clinicians, KOLs, researchers and internal stakeholders.

Preferred Requirements

· Direct experience with DBS, aDBS, BCI, neuromodulation, neurostimulation or implantable neurological devices.

· Experience in Clinical Affairs, Medical Affairs, Clinical Research, Scientific Affairs or R&D Clinical Strategy.

· Familiarity with Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, essential tremor, refractory epilepsy, selected neuropsychiatric disorders, Alzheimer’s disease or other severe neurological conditions.

· Experience with clinical trials, evidence generation, scientific briefings, literature reviews or clinical evaluation documents.

· Previous interaction with KOLs, scientific advisory boards or international research groups.

What We Offer

· A high-impact, founding-era scientific role at a category leader in adaptive (closed-loop) DBS – one of the most active frontier areas in neuromodulation today.

· Direct ownership of the scientific case for Newronika’s pipeline beyond Parkinson’s disease – shaping which indications are pursued and how.

· Deep engagement with leading neurologists, neurosurgeons, and academic researchers at top global DBS and neuromodulation centers.

· Direct collaboration with Newronika’s clinical, regulatory, R&D, and executive leadership in Milan.

· Access to one of the field’s richest curated neural-data assets (WebBioBank) to inform hypothesis development and biomarker discovery.

· Fully remote work flexibility within the United States, with periodic travel to Newronika headquarters in Milan.

· Competitive compensation, benefits, and growth-stage equity participation; details to be shared during the interview process.
