Scuola Superiore Meridionale - Post-doctoral fellow in Global History and Governance
The Scuola Superiore Meridionale, Naples (Italy), invites applications for two 1-year (renewable for up to 3 years) postdoc fellowships in Global History and Governance. The program in Global Histories and Governance focuses on the comparisons, connections, and processes of globalization that have characterized different areas of the planet between the 16th and the 20th centuries by concentrating on the relational dimension of historical processes, legal regimes, and the organization of power; on the interconnections between economic, political, legal, cultural and social factors; and on the circulation, exchange, and interconnection of ideas, persons, institutions, legal cultures, political models, concepts, rights and goods on a global scale.
The postdoc candidate must develop research with a comparative, transnational and/or global approach, paying attention to the relational dimension of historical processes, legal regimes and the organization of power; the interdependencies among economic, political, legal, cultural and social factors; and the circulation, exchange and interconnectedness of ideas, people, institutions, legal cultures, political models, concepts, rights and goods on a worldwide scale. The research must focus on the period between the 16th and 21st centuries. The selection will favor the highest-quality and most feasible projects that focus on one or more of the thematic areas indicated above.
Successful applicants must reside in Naples. They will spend their time as fellows working on their own research and writing projects, while taking advantage of the academic and professional resources available at the SSM. The fellowship's emphasis is to provide ample time for the early-career scholar’s own research and writing, including book manuscripts, journal articles, and similar projects.
Additionally, postdoc fellows have the opportunity to teach a 20-hour course annually to SSM undergraduate or graduate students. They will also actively participate in the GHG area’s programs and activities, such as guest lectures, conferences, and mentoring undergrad and grad students.
Fellowships are initially for one year but can be renewed for two additional years, pending satisfactory performance and continued funding. The fellowship program begins between July and September 2026.
Eligibility: Candidates of any nationality who have obtained their first Ph.D. degree by the deadline of this call can participate. Applicants must also have an excellent command of English and possibly of a second or third language. They must present a research project on a subject relevant to the research program.
Salary and Benefits: The salary is € 28.456,47 per year (before taxes). Each fellow will receive an annual research budget of circa € 1,500.
Location: Naples (Italy). Fellowships require residency for the duration of the tenure.
