Role Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced RPG Free / RPGLE Expert with 8–10 years of hands‑on experience to lead development, modernization, and support of IBM i (AS/400) applications for Retail IT systems.

This role requires deep technical expertise, strong ownership of retail applications, and the ability to drive complex enhancements, production stability, and modernization initiatives across business‑critical retail platforms.


Key Responsibilities

RPG Development & Technical Leadership

Lead design, development, and optimization of applications using RPG Free / RPGLE.

Own complex batch and interactive programs supporting high‑volume retail transactions.

Drive code refactoring, modernization, and performance tuning initiatives.

Establish and enforce coding standards, best practices, and quality guidelines.

Retail IT Application Ownership

Own and enhance Retail IT applications, including:

Inventory & Stock Management

Sales Order Processing & Billing

Pricing, Promotions, and Discounts

Store Operations and Supply‑Chain processes

Act as technical SME for business‑critical retail systems.

Perform deep root cause analysis and implement long‑term fixes for production issues.

IBM i Platform & Database Expertise

Expert‑level work with DB2/400 database objects and performance tuning.

Develop and optimize SQLRPGLE programs.

Design and maintain CL programs, job scheduling, and system interfaces.

Support integrations with upstream/downstream retail systems and external partners.


Leadership, Mentoring & Delivery


Mentor and guide junior and mid‑level RPG developers.

Lead technical design discussions, code reviews, and solution walkthroughs.

Coordinate with business users, functional teams, QA, and operations.

Support UAT, production releases, audits, and compliance requirements.

Maintain comprehensive technical documentation and knowledge repositories.


Required Skills & Experience

Technical Skills (Mandatory)


8–10 years of strong experience in RPG Free / RPGLE

Expert knowledge of:


Free‑format RPG coding standards

SQLRPGLE

DB2/400

CL programming

Deep understanding of IBM i (AS/400) architecture


Experience handling large‑scale, high‑availability retail systems


Retail IT Expertise


Extensive experience in Retail IT application development


Strong understanding of:

Retail inventory and supply‑chain workflows

Sales, pricing, billing, and promotions

Store systems and back‑office retail applications


Proven experience in support + enhancement + modernization programs


Good to Have


Experience leading legacy modernization or transformation initiatives

Exposure to web services, APIs, or integration frameworks

Familiarity with ITSM tools (ServiceNow, JIRA)

Experience acting as Module Lead / Technical Lead

Knowledge of retail ERP or merchandising systems
