R&D & Pipeline Long-Term Planning Specialist

About the Opportunity

An international, research-driven biopharmaceutical company is seeking an R&D & Pipeline Long-Term Planning Specialist to join its Global R&D Strategy and Portfolio team. This role sits at the heart of R&D decision-making, supporting senior leadership with strategic planning, portfolio analytics, and long-term forecasting to maximize the value of a global development pipeline.

Working closely with cross-functional stakeholders across R&D, Finance, Portfolio Management, and Strategy, you will provide robust data-driven insights that guide investment decisions, resource planning, and pipeline prioritisation across early and late-stage development programs.

The Role

As the R&D & Pipeline Long-Term Planning Specialist, you will develop long-term pipeline projections, analyse portfolio performance, and support strategic planning activities across the R&D organisation. You will play a key role in ensuring leadership has accurate, actionable information relating to project value, timelines, costs, resource requirements, and probability of success.

This position combines strategic thinking with advanced analytical capabilities and offers significant exposure to senior stakeholders across a global pharmaceutical R&D organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Long-Term Planning

- Develop quantitative projections for R&D pipeline costs, resource requirements, timelines, and workload in collaboration with Global Project Managers and cross-functional stakeholders. - Produce short- and long-term workload analyses to support R&D capacity and headcount planning. - Partner with Finance to ensure alignment between operational forecasts and long-term financial planning. - Maintain and enhance long-term planning methodologies, processes, and forecasting tools using internal data, external benchmarks, and subject matter expertise. - Coordinate updates to Project Probability of Technical and Regulatory Success (PTRS) in line with internal governance processes. - Ensure consistency between cost, workload, and probability assessments across internal development projects and external opportunities. - Maintain the integrity and continuous improvement of Enterprise Project & Portfolio Management systems (Planisware) and associated reporting platforms.

Portfolio Strategy & Pipeline Reviews

- Support R&D strategy development and periodic portfolio review cycles through robust quantitative analysis. - Prepare pipeline forecasts and strategic insights to support executive decision-making. - Upload and maintain long-term planning data within financial planning systems. - Contribute to the development of portfolio prioritisation frameworks alongside Global Strategy and Commercial teams.

Project Evaluation

- Develop and maintain standardised project evaluation templates to ensure consistent assessment of internal pipeline assets. - Support cross-functional governance meetings by preparing analyses, business cases, and strategic recommendations. - Produce detailed assessments of pipeline composition, project value, risk, and long-term strategic outlook.

Qualifications

Required

- Degree in Management Engineering, Business, Economics, Life Sciences, Pharmacy, or a related scientific discipline. - Alternatively, a scientific degree combined with an MBA or relevant pharmaceutical industry experience. - Proven experience within pharmaceutical or biotechnology R&D strategy, portfolio management, business planning, or innovation management. - Strong understanding of pharmaceutical development processes and project portfolio management. - Experience producing forecasts, resource models, and strategic pipeline analyses. - Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills. - Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across global, cross-functional teams. - Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office. - Experience using Enterprise Project & Portfolio Management (EPPM) systems, ERP platforms, and Business Intelligence tools. - Fluency in English.

Preferred

- Experience using Planisware and/or SAP. - Power BI expertise. - Experience developing predictive or optimisation models. - Knowledge of data science tools, programming languages, artificial intelligence, or machine learning. - Experience supporting digital transformation initiatives within R&D.
