The Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence (AI4I) is an Institute that aims to enhance scientific research, technological transfer, and, more generally, the innovation capacity of the Country, promoting its positive impact on industry, services and public administration. To this end, the Institute contributes to creating a research and innovation infrastructure that employs artificial intelligence methods, with particular reference to manufacturing processes, within the framework of the Industry 4.0 process and its entire value chain. The Institute establishes relationships with similar entities and organizations in Italy and abroad, including Competence Centers and European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs).

Job Description

The lab develops AI methods for advanced materials and engineering design, with research spanning machine learning, physics-based modeling, simulation, optimization, and intelligent material systems. We are particularly interested in candidates eager to work on ambitious interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of AI, physics, materials science, mechanics, and robotics.

Current Research Directions Include

• Physics-Aware AI models for multiscale simulation, surrogate modeling, and scientific discovery
• AI-guided design of Robotic Matter and architected material systems
• Generative AI for advanced materials and engineering design
• AI-native approaches to multifunctional, adaptive, and intelligent materials

About You

You are strongly curious and motivated, with a strong interest and background in one or more of the following areas:

• Machine learning / AI
• Computational mechanics / physics-based simulation
• Materials science / metamaterials / architected materials
• Robotics / intelligent systems
• Applied mathematics / scientific computing
