R&D Photonics Engineer
Descrizione dell'offerta
Purpose
As an R&D Photonics Engineer, you will develop advanced optical components, including laser devices and fiber optic systems, and integrate them into electro-mechanical platforms used in ophthalmic microsurgery. You will contribute across the full product lifecycle, from concept and prototyping through validation and regulatory support, helping translate photonics innovation into reliable clinical solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and optimize BVI current opto‑laser systems and endo‑ocular fiber optics portfolio, design and develop opto solutions to be used in advanced microsurgery procedures to treat vision‑threatening illnesses, follow the development of prototypes as well as associated test and fabrication fixtures.
- Build prototypes and conduct experimental, hands‑on tests to measure performance metrics, e.g. power, wavelength, and beam quality.
- Utilize simulation software to design and simulate laser systems, optical components and fiber optics.
- Integrate lasers, opto‑sensors and fibers into electro‑mechanical systems for precise ophthalmological surgery applications.
- Identify, analyze and resolve optical performance issues.
- Interface with internal and external suppliers, manufacturers, and customers.
- Work collaboratively with other teams (e.g. Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Procurement, Purchasing and Service) at all stages of development and throughout the product lifecycle.
- Support the Quality team in ensuring GxP and other activities (e.g., complaints root causing and resolution).
- Support the Regulatory team with technical documentation as mandated by authorities: writing of validation protocols, validation reports and execution of validations, compiling specifications, protocols, reports.
- Effectively communicate activity status, issues and mitigation plans with key stakeholders.
- Organize investigatory testing as required.
Qualification
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, or Electrical Engineering.
- Strong understanding of laser physics, geometric/physical optics, and opto‑mechanical engineering.
- Knowledge of applicable materials, manufacturing methods and engineering industry standards and specifications.
- Hands‑on experience in a laboratory setting with optical tables, detectors, and alignment techniques.
- 3–5 years’ relevant experience in electro‑optical systems development, ideally in medical device industry; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Good influencing and communication skills.
- Flexibility.
- Proactivity.
- Result orientation with the ability to plan and deliver against project deadlines.
- Must work onsite in Rome, IT.
Other Requirements
- Knowledge of CAD design.
- Experience operating in regulated design controls environment with knowledge of ISO, theory and legislative standards applicable to the development of medical devices (e.g., FDA, MDR, 13485 etc.).
- Excellent knowledge of spoken and written Italian and English.
- May require travel up to 20%.
