About the laboratory and research activities:

The laboratory of Prof. F.A. Bava is seeking talented and motivated PhD candidates and Postdocs!

The lab’s focus is on spatial biology, gene regulation and cancer immunology. As we work these subjects, our lab enjoys tech-development. For this reason, we welcome scientists with multiple backgrounds and we try to merge knowledge and capitalize on diversity. The laboratory is fully equipped with multiple state-of-the-art spatial biology platforms. For relevant publications, please search on Pubmed “BAVA FA”.

The laboratory is located in the University campus and is also affiliated with the nearby IRCCS San Matteo hospital, where our clinically oriented projects are carried out. It is currently funded by the FIS3 Consolidator Grant from the Italian Ministry of University and Research (equivalent to the ERC Consolidator).

About the Location

Established in 1361, the University of Pavia is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Italy, renowned as the institution where Nobel Laureate Camillo Golgi conducted his groundbreaking research. Beyond the university itself, Pavia is a vibrant scientific hub, hosting at least four other centers of excellence in Biomedicine (IRCCS San Matteo, IRCCS Mondino, IRCCS Maugeri, and CNAO) alongside a branch of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). Despite its rich scientific ecosystem, Pavia is a highly livable town (approx. 70,000 residents) offering an excellent quality of life. It is located just a few kilometers from Milan, providing easy access to a dynamic metropolitan lifestyle and major international airports.

Position Details

PhD candidates will have to pass a selection from the University of Pavia. PhD positions are fully funded for a whole duration of the studies (which in Italy is 3 years), while Postdoctoral positions are available for a duration of 1 year, renewable for up to 5 years. We offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience and local living standards.

Qualifications

We are seeking self-motivated, curious, rigorous, and dedicated junior scientists.

We welcome applications from both experimentalists (molecular biologists, biochemists, chemists, or similar fields) and computational biologists .

  • English proficiency is a must.
  • Familiarity with fluorescence microscopy (and related methods such as FISH, IF, etc.) OR Next-Generation Sequencing (RNAseq, scRNAseq, etc.) is a must.
  • Familiarity with the fields of gene regulation AND/OR immunology is a must.
  • For postdocs: very good/excellent publication record is a plus.
  • For computational biologists: proficiency with Python is a must.
  • Experience in the field of spatial biology (e.g., spatial transcriptomics, in situ sequencing, multiplexed protein imaging) is a plus.

Application

A complete application must include:

  1. A short cover letter (max one A4 page), highlighting how your background aligns to the research area.
  2. A curriculum vitae (CV), including a full list of publications.
  3. Names and contact details of at least 2 reference persons.
