Offer Description The University of Bologna offers one PhD position in the European Doctoral Network " Decentralized critical Infrastructure Asset Monitoring and condition assessment "

DIAMOND

in the field of intelligent sensor systems. DIAMOND is a European consortium of 13 partners and 3 associated partners from 9 countries, tackling the digital transformation of critical infrastructure assets by using sensor data analytics and sector‑specific monitoring for timely decision making. The project focuses on advanced computational capabilities for self‑aware engineered environments across infrastructure, energy, automotive, industrial and art assets, using artificial intelligence on a chip and sustainable power harvesting.

The selected PhD candidate (DIAMOND‑DC04) will design, implement and test novel sensor systems for vibration characterization at the extreme edge, including Tiny Machine Learning approaches, electronic prototyping and security aspects. The role includes research projects, participation in DIAMOND network activities and local courses, publication of scientific papers, teaching and dissemination at conferences and the public, and involvement in departmental and group activities.

Key responsibilities:

Design, develop and test sensor systems for vibration characterization at the extreme edge.

Implement Tiny Machine Learning algorithms on resource‑constrained hardware.

Prototype electronic circuits and evaluate signal processing solutions.

Ensure security of sensor networks and data handling.

Participate in research projects, local courses and international conferences.

Publish scientific articles and contribute to doctoral thesis.

Qualifications

Master’s degree (MSc) in Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science Engineering or a related discipline.

Strong background in embedded systems, artificial intelligence and extreme edge computing.

Experience in electronic circuit design and signal processing.

Good written and spoken English; no Italian language required.

Ability to work independently and in a multi‑disciplinary team.

Motivation for early‑stage research and passion for intelligent sensor systems.

Salary and Contract The position is a 36‑month, full‑time employment contract under the Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Actions (MSCA) regulations. Monthly gross salary includes:

Living allowance: 3,300 €/month.

Mobility allowance: 600 €/month.

Family allowance (if applicable): 660 €/month.

Net salary may vary with 2026 national taxation changes.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidate must be a doctoral candidate (DC) with no doctoral degree awarded and in the first four years of research career.

Nationality: open to all nationalities.

Mobility: at recruitment, no residency or main activity in Italy for more than 12 months in the last three years.

Master’s degree must be awarded no later than 31 October 2026 if not yet obtained.

Required documents: Bachelor’s diploma (EQF 6), Master’s diploma (EQF 7, not older than six years), certifications of examinations, and, if foreign, comparable documents (e.g., Diploma Supplement).

Selection Process

Pre‑selection: CV and documents evaluated (60 % of total score) based on eligibility, academic background, publications and additional titles.

Interview: video conference (40 % of total score) assessing curriculum vitae, motivation letter, academic documents, brief research proposal and cover letter.
