The opportunity

Hitachi Energy is looking for a Patent Counsel to strengthen its global IP team, focusing on our Sustainable Products portfolio, including Transformers and High Voltage products, aligned with the company's IP strategy.

As Patent Counsel, you will ensure our strategic IP portfolio develops in accordance with our IP strategy. Your responsibilities include drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications, as well as maintaining and defending patent rights, working alongside our team of Patent Counsels.

The preferred locations are Västerås, Sweden; Milano, Italy; or Warsaw, Poland, with options for hybrid or remote work from these countries. Some domestic and international travel may be required.

How you'll make an impact

  1. Support and advise on invention disclosures, identify IP opportunities, and align filings with company strategy.
  2. Collaborate with external counsel to draft, file, and prosecute patent applications; manage external engagements and take necessary actions.
  3. Lead risk management activities globally, monitor competitor patent activities, and inform stakeholders across IP, R&D, and business units.
  4. Promote IP awareness, make strategic IP decisions, and provide training and communication within R&D and other departments.
  5. Contribute to initiatives that improve IP awareness and performance.

Your background

  • Part or newly-qualified European Patent Attorney with experience and a degree in electrical engineering, electronics, physics, or mechanical engineering; 3+ years in patent work in law firms or industry, focusing on electrical and mechanical inventions.
  • Experience with computer-implemented inventions is advantageous.
  • Entrepreneurial, with a growth mindset, creativity, organizational and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to build constructive relationships.
  • Flexible, self-driven, proactive, and capable of working globally with remote teams.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills, quick learner, with diverse technical expertise.
  • English is the working language at Hitachi Energy.
