Optical / Laser Communication System Engineer – Italy (Hybrid) Full-Time, Permanent

NewSpace Technical is partnered with an innovative European engineering company at the forefront of optical and laser‑based technologies for space and ground applications. With a strong reputation for pushing technical boundaries, they play a key role in shaping the future of space‑based optical communications and ground station infrastructure. As part of their continued growth, we are looking for a Laser Communication System Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team working on cutting‑edge optical systems for both terrestrial and space environments. This is a highly collaborative environment where engineering excellence, innovation, and hands‑on problem solving are at the core of everything they do.

Responsibilities

  • Leading system‑level activities for optical ground stations and laser communication systems.
  • Defining system architecture, sizing, and performance budgets.
  • Managing subsystem requirements and interface definitions.
  • Performing analysis, modelling, and simulation of optical systems.
  • Defining verification and validation strategies.
  • Supporting integration, verification, and experimental testing (lab and field).
  • Producing high‑quality technical documentation.
  • Coordinating subcontractors and overseeing technical delivery.
  • Acting as a technical interface with customers and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • ~3+ years of experience in optical systems, particularly within laser communications or photonics.
  • Strong team player with a proactive and detail‑oriented mindset.
  • Comfortable working across multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electronics, operations).
  • Good communication skills in English.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Hands‑on experience in at least one of the following:
    • Free‑space optical satellite communications
    • Satellite laser ranging
    • Laser beam propagation
    • Laser physics and photonics
  • Experience with system‑level design and performance analysis.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB, Python, or Octave.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities.
  • Ability to contribute across the full system lifecycle.

Desirable Experience

  • Knowledge of adaptive optics and wavefront sensing.
  • Experience in optical detection and communication systems.
  • Familiarity with pointing, acquisition, and tracking systems.
  • Experience with optical design/simulation tools (e.g., Zemax).
  • Familiarity with requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS).
  • Experience working with external partners or subcontractors.
