Optical / Laser Communication System Engineer – Italy (Hybrid)

Full-Time, Permanent

NewSpace Technical is partnered with an innovative European engineering company at the forefront of optical and laser-based technologies for space and ground applications. With a strong reputation for pushing technical boundaries, they play a key role in shaping the future of space-based optical communications and ground station infrastructure. As part of their continued growth, we are looking for a Laser Communication System Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team working on cutting‑edge optical systems for both terrestrial and space environments. This is a highly collaborative environment where engineering excellence, innovation, and hands‑on problem‑solving are at the core of everything they do.

The Role

As a Lasercomm System Engineer, you will contribute to the design and development of advanced optical ground systems and laser communication technologies, supporting projects from early concept through to testing and validation.

  • Lead system‑level activities for optical ground stations and laser communication systems
  • Define system architecture, sizing, and performance budgets
  • Manage subsystem requirements and interface definitions
  • Perform analysis, modelling, and simulation of optical systems
  • Define verification and validation strategies
  • Support integration, verification, and experimental testing (lab and field)
  • Produce high‑quality technical documentation
  • Coordinate subcontractors and oversee technical delivery
  • Act as a technical interface with customers and stakeholders

Your Background

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Physics, or a related field
  • ~3+ years of experience in optical systems, particularly within laser communications or photonics
  • Strong team player with a proactive and detail‑oriented mindset
  • Comfortable working across multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electronics, operations)
  • Good communication skills in English

Key Skills & Experience

  • Hands‑on experience in at least one of the following:
    • Free‑space optical satellite communications
    • Satellite laser ranging
    • Laser beam propagation
    • Laser physics and photonics
  • Experience with system‑level design and performance analysis
  • Proficiency with MATLAB, Python, or Octave
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities
  • Ability to contribute across the full system lifecycle

Desirable Experience

  • Knowledge of adaptive optics and wavefront sensing
  • Experience in optical detection and communication systems
  • Familiarity with pointing, acquisition, and tracking systems
  • Experience with optical design/simulation tools (e.g. Zemax)
  • Familiarity with requirements management tools (e.g. DOORS)
  • Experience working with external partners or subcontractors
