Optical Network Development Engineer, Core Networking

We are looking for an experienced engineer who thrives with new technologies and optimizing existing systems in a large‑scale enterprise or service‑provider environment. The role plays a key part in driving the stability and sustainability of next‑generation IP networks across multiple global data centers.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and implement changes on the network.
- Collaborate with automation teams to define tools that enable higher scalability.
- Lead network projects in sustaining engineering, deployment, scaling, technology refresh, best‑practice application, and optimization.
- Provide critical support to diagnose, mitigate impact, and resolve large‑scale networking events for significant AWS customers.
- Operate and troubleshoot routing, interconnectivity, platforms, performance, and configuration issues, including low‑level application interaction and Unix systems.
- Drive and support innovation from Top of Rack to Network Border.
- Partner with broader Network/Infrastructure organization on engineering, configuration standards, and tools.
- Work closely with Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure rapid, smooth roll‑out of new designs and products.
- Maintain standards and ensure compliance with networking tool policies.
- Deliver simple, sustainable, and repeatable solutions and processes.
- Collaborate with tier‑one escalation engineers to resolve complex issues.
- Create and review documentation related to network implementation, recurring issues, new SOPs, and knowledge transfer material.
A Day in the Life
Engineers in the Core Networking team handle a wide range of responsibilities including hardware and software development, cross‑platform integration, production delivery, day‑to‑day on‑call operations, sustaining engineering, operational load automation, product and network security, data integrity, availability assurance, and fiber infrastructure management. They own long‑term strategic views, build strong customer partnerships, influence technology and design decisions, and balance short‑term operational needs with long‑term business goals.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or above in computer science or equivalent.
- 4+ years of experience with the rollout and maintenance of large DWDM networks and optical network technologies.
- 4+ years of experience with optical planning and modeling tools.
- 4+ years of experience with optical network design and troubleshooting.
- 1+ years of professional development experience with Python or a similar tool for network automation scripting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expert network analysis fundamentals and robust troubleshooting skills.
- In‑depth working knowledge of IP networking fundamentals.
- In‑depth Unix experience and ability to script/program in Python or a similar scripting language.
- Knowledge of L2 and L3 routing.
- A relevant degree in a related technical discipline or equivalent experience in a large‑scale network environment.
