About Us
Generative Bionics is a deep-tech company building humanoid robot platforms to deploy human-centered Physical AI. We design intelligent, capable machines that work alongside people in real-world environments — developed in Genova, Italy.
Role
We are looking for a talented and motivated Mechanical Designer to join our growing Hardware Engineering team. In this role, you will contribute directly to the design, prototyping, and iteration of mechanical components and subsystems for our humanoid robot platform. You will work closely with senior mechanical engineers and cross-functional teams spanning electronics, software, and AI to bring ambitious robotic designs from concept to physical reality. This is a unique early-career opportunity to work at the intersection of mechanical engineering and humanoid robotics within a fast-moving startup environment. You will gain hands-on experience with advanced actuation systems, sensor integration, structural design for dynamic platforms, and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) skills that place you at the forefront of one of the most transformative industries of our time.
Responsibilities
- Mechanical Design and CAD Modeling: Design and model mechanical components and assemblies for the humanoid robot using professional 3D CAD software (Creo, SolidWorks, CATIA or equivalent), producing detailed part models, assembly structures, and engineering drawings with proper GD&T.
- Mechatronic Subsystem Development: Support the development and refinement of key mechatronic subsystems including actuation modules, joint mechanisms, structural frames, sensor housings, and cable management solutions.
- Prototyping and Testing: Build, assemble, and test physical prototypes in our in-house lab, iterating rapidly on designs based on test data, team feedback, and real-world performance observations.
- Engineering Analysis: Perform basic engineering analyses (FEA, tolerance stack-ups, weight/cost estimates) to validate design decisions and ensure components meet performance, durability, and safety requirements.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with the electronics and software teams to ensure seamless electromechanical integration of sensors, actuators, PCBs, wiring harnesses, and communication interfaces within the robot architecture.
- Technical Documentation: Create and maintain clear, well-organized technical documentation including design specifications, assembly instructions, Bill of Materials (BoM), and revision history.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Proficiency in at least one professional 3D CAD platform (Creo, SolidWorks, CATIA or equivalent) with the ability to create complex parts, assemblies, and production-quality drawings.
- Engineering Fundamentals: Foundational knowledge of mechanical engineering principles: statics, dynamics, strength of materials, kinematics, and mechanism design.
- Basic understanding of manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, 3D printing (FDM/SLA/SLS), sheet metal fabrication, and injection molding.
- Hands-on Mindset: Willingness to work in the lab, build prototypes, troubleshoot physical assemblies, and iterate quickly.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced startup environment.
- Fluent in English (written and spoken).
- Availability to travel nationally and internationally is expected.
Valued Extras
- Experience with simulation and analysis tools (ANSYS, MATLAB, Simulink or equivalent) for FEA, dynamic simulation, or tolerance analysis.
- Previous exposure to robotics projects (academic, competition, or professional), particularly involving actuators, sensors, or locomotion systems.
- Familiarity with electromechanical integration concepts: motors, motor drivers, encoders, force/torque sensors.
- Advanced Materials: Experience with lightweight materials (composites, alluminium alloys) and structural optimization for weight-sensitive applications.
- Contributions to open-source robotics projects or a personal portfolio of mechanical design work.
We Offer
- Cutting-Edge Technology: Work with one of the most advanced humanoid robotic platforms in Europe, integrating state-of-the-art actuation, sensor fusion, and Vision-Language-Action AI models.
- Growth: In a startup building from zero, your learning curve will be steep and your skill development rapid. You will gain exposure to the full product lifecycle, from early-stage R&D through Design for Manufacturing and production readiness.
- Environment: An informal, fast-paced, and meritocratic startup context driven by Agile methodologies.
- Compensation: Competitive salary and contract commensurate with experience.
