Lead Mechanical Engineer (Data Centers)

On-site - Milan, Italy

Want to lead a data centre project where your decisions actually shape how it gets delivered?

This is not a role where you sit on the sidelines reviewing other people’s work.

You will set the standard for how mechanical engineering and commissioning runs on a major data centre project. You will influence how systems are built, tested and signed off. And you will develop engineers who go on to lead projects themselves.

If you enjoy being hands-on, making technical calls, and seeing your decisions translate into real progress on site, this will feel very different to most “lead” roles.

What you will get out of this

  • Real ownership of the mechanical function across a complex, high-value project
  • The chance to shape engineering and commissioning processes, not just follow them
  • A visible leadership role where your input directly affects programme, quality and delivery
  • The opportunity to mentor and develop engineers who rely on your guidance
  • A project environment where technical competence matters and gets recognised

What you will be doing

You will lead the mechanical engineering scope from design through to commissioning and handover.

That includes:

  • Setting direction for the mechanical engineering team and supporting them day to day
  • Reviewing and challenging design to make sure it works in reality, not just on paper
  • Coordinating with vendors, controls providers and construction teams
  • Leading technical and commissioning meetings that move things forward
  • Managing change, solving problems early, and keeping the project on track

You will stay close to the detail. This is not a purely managerial role.

Where you will have real impact

Engineering

You will act as the technical anchor for the project. You will validate designs, manage system trackers, and ensure everything is aligned before it hits site.

Testing and commissioning

You will define how systems are tested, oversee execution, and make sure issues are closed properly. No shortcuts.

Quality

You will set the standards for walkdowns, verification and documentation so the project is delivered exactly as intended.

Planning and delivery

You will contribute to programme planning, track progress, and remove blockers before they become delays.

Risk

You will identify issues early, communicate them clearly, and create a culture where risks are dealt with, not ignored.

People

You will mentor engineers at different stages of their careers and help them step up.

What you will need to bring

  • Strong mechanical engineering background within complex projects
  • Experience leading engineering or commissioning on data centre or similar environments
  • Confidence to challenge design and make decisions
  • Ability to balance technical detail with project delivery
  • A mindset focused on clarity, ownership and follow-through

Why this role exists

This project needs someone who can connect design, construction and commissioning into one clear, controlled process.

Not someone who just reports on progress. Someone who drives it.

What next

If you are currently leading mechanical packages or acting as the go-to technical person on site, this is the step where you take full ownership of the function.
