The Multilingualism and Plurilingualism research group at the Institute for Applied Linguistics (IAL) at Eurac Research is looking for a junior researcher in applied linguistics/corpus linguistics, who will join and support the team of the research project linguaXlab which has the aim to maximize access and (re)use of the linguistic data and technology produced by, and relating to, South Tyrol. Expanding the existing and freely accessible Korpus Südtirol ( the project aims to build a reliable and representative text collection of South Tyrolean Standard German and to use this data to linguistically analyse and describe this language variety. We are looking for a cooperative and proactive team member with an applied research profile. The ideal candidate will have previous work experience within German linguistics, corpus linguistics and/or variational linguistics. Basic knowledge in computational linguistics (or the willingness to acquire it) is an advantage. We welcome applicants who are interested in starting a doctoral programme at the end of the 1.5 years contract and using Korpus Südtirol as potential source for their dissertation.
Tasks
- Support in the conceptualisation and implementation of linguistic analyses using data from Korpus Südtirol
- Support tasks related to expanding Korpus Südtirol
- Contribute to research dissemination through scientific and transfer-oriented publications and activities
- Support in organisational activities of the project
- Participation in the group’s and Institute’s general activities
Requirements
- MA/Diploma in German Linguistics or Applied Linguistics or other relevant fields, background in corpus linguistics and/or variational linguistics is an advantage
- (Basic) knowledge of statistical methods of data analysis
- Knowledge of computational linguistics (or the willingness to acquire it) is an advantage(MG2)
- Social, organisational and communication skills, including careful scheduling and task management
- Ability to work in a research team and in a flexible and interdisciplinary setting
- Willingness to move to South Tyrol or to its vicinity to work on-site
- German as first language (AA3) (MG4) or native-like competences (C2 level) in German
- Strong command of English
- Basic knowledge of Italian or the willingness to develop Italian as a working language

- A full-time position for 18 months with the possibility of extension depending on project needs and the candidate’s performance. If the selected candidate is interested, a part-time contract of at least 70% could also be considered
