Job Overview

IT Solution Architect – Italy at Thales (Thales Alenia Space joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%)), a global space manufacturer delivering high‑tech solutions for telecommunications, navigation, Earth observation, environmental management, exploration, science and orbital infrastructures.

Mission

Within the Enterprise Architecture department, the IT Solution Architect participates during the design and build phases of projects to guarantee the global consistency of the enterprise IT technical architecture. The role involves designing solutions that satisfy business needs while assessing the impacts on current systems architecture, ensuring compliance with IT standards, norms and rules, and collaborating with the IT & Security directorate.

Responsibilities

• Guarantee consistency of technical architecture
• Ensure compliance with enterprise architecture methodology, technical design process, principles & rules, and relevant IT standards & norms.
• Promote reuse of architecture components & patterns, favoring cost‑efficient & sustainable designs.
• Advocate technical design choices to ensure coherence across Thales Alenia Space countries.
• Contribute to knowledge capitalization and sharing (modeling, documentation, communication, training).
• Propose updates to the architecture principles & rules repository.
• Participate actively in the architecture governance process from demand to delivery.
• Advise upon technical architectures & solutions, designing One‑TAS technical architectures in response to projects or change requests.
• Analyze technical impacts and ensure coherence with existing architecture elements (As‑Is & To‑Be).
• Propose designs that respect contextual constraints (priority, time, resources, organization & data).
• Inform stakeholders about issues in the current technical solutions.
• Collaborate with IT & Security teams to meet performance, adaptability & interoperability goals.
• Facilitate architecture design, risk assessment & security validation; document decisions in the decision log.
• Support and verify systems during implementation before production delivery.
• Research emerging technologies, identify opportunities, and participate in proof‑of‑concepts.

Technical Skills

Infrastructure Domain (Storage, Backup, Data Management, Virtualization & security)

• Storage: DAS/NAS/SAN/HCI/SDS; Block & File services; Gold/ Bronze data storage; FC and iSCSI technologies; FC SAN design & zoning; HA clustering; HCI/SDS storage; Object storage (S3/S3+); vendors (Dell/EMC/HPE/Brocade/Nutanix/VMware).
• Backup / DRP: Physical & Virtual server backup infrastructure; end‑user laptop backup; data archiving & long‑term retention; tape & tape‑drive knowledge; DRP architecture for DLO/RTO; vendors (Atempo, Veeam, Avamar).
• Servers & Platforms: Dell/EMC/HPE platforms; legacy server architecture; HCI virtualization (Nutanix/VSAN); virtual ESXi node sizing.
• Virtualization: VMware vSphere & vSAN, Nutanix, NSX architecture & security, vREALIZE automation suite.
• BigData Infrastructure: Docker/Kubernetes, network overlays (VLAN, VxLAN, Flannel, Calico, GENEVE), stateless/persistent architectures, Rancher/Ansible/Terraform/Packer/GoVCR, Elastic Search/InfluxDB.
• Data‑Center Architecture: Energy & thermal constraints; power balancing; equipment location; data‑room documentation.

• TOGAF
• VMware Certified Professional / Advanced Professional (VCP‑NV, VCP‑DCV, VCP‑CMA, VCP‑Security)
• Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert
• Google Cloud Network Engineer / Cloud Architect
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional
• Cisco CCNP Enterprise
