Engine Performance Development Engineer
The person will be involved within the Powertrain Testing Development Group, reporting to the Engine Performance Development Team Leader. This role is responsible for developing the base engine calibration to ensure performance targets are achieved in terms of power, emissions, fuel consumption, and drivability. Most activities take place in dedicated engine test cells, but the candidate is expected to support work in other facilities and on vehicles when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Interact with the Engine Technical Office (simulation, concept, and design teams) to clarify performance targets and expectations before experimental activities begin and provide feedback throughout the project.
- Collaborate with facilities engineers and operational staff to ensure efficient and accurate test preparation and execution.
- Execute base engine calibration according to defined procedures and within specified timeframes.
- Report anomalies during the calibration process promptly to the relevant teams.
- Work closely with engineers in Emissions, Application, and Vehicle groups to ensure the base calibration meets requirements.
- Prepare and deliver concise, high-quality technical reports after each interim calibration activity and comprehensive reports at key milestones.
- Propose improvements to hardware, software, and procedures.
- Ensure engine performance can be homologated to project targets.
Skills and Requirements
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in engine calibration, ideally with high-performance automotive GDI engines.
- Strong understanding of SI engine fundamentals, particularly the relationship between engine calibration, performance, and emissions.
- Knowledge of typical instrumentation used in engine test cells.
- Experience with calibration software (Bosch INCA preferred) and data analysis tools (AVL Concerto and Matlab preferred).
- Familiarity with typical ECU software structures.
- Understanding of modern SI engine aftertreatment systems, especially Three-Way Catalysts and Gasoline Particulate Filters.
- Basic knowledge of emissions regulations and homologation procedures in key markets (EU, USA, China), including Real Driving Emissions testing.
- Positive attitude toward teamwork, with strong verbal and written communication skills.
