Call for Expression of Interest for MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships at Politecnico di Bari

Department of Mechanics, Mathematics and Management

Title: Economics and Management of Energy and the Environment

Description:

This field focuses on the study and analysis of the economic, industrial, and managerial processes associated with the energy transition and environmental sustainability. The overarching aim is to understand the dynamics of change affecting firms and markets in the context of decarbonization, technological innovation, and the so-called twin transition (the combined digital and green transitions). The main purpose is to identify the economic, organizational, and technological mechanisms that support energy efficiency, the development of environmental and energy markets, sustainable innovation, and firm competitiveness within the new energy and environmental paradigm.

Specific objectives include, but are not limited to:

  • The analysis of the twin transition , understood as the integration of digital innovation (IoT, AI, blockchain, big data) with environmental innovation, aimed at enhancing opportunities for energy efficiency, reducing environmental impacts, and enabling the transformation of business models toward more sustainable and competitive paradigms;
  • The study of sustainable and energy innovation processes , with emphasis on the dynamics of clean-technology development and adoption, the role of startups and incumbent firms, and energy-innovation ecosystems;
  • The analysis of economic and financial mechanisms (regional, national, and supranational) supporting the energy and ecological transition, with particular reference to green finance instruments, public incentive schemes, and public–private partnership models designed to foster sustainable investment;
  • Corporate energy analysis and energy auditing , with particular attention to evaluating energy performance, measuring consumption patterns, and estimating the economic returns of energy-efficiency interventions, including through environmental markets;
  • The study of energy markets , focusing on the functioning and optimization of electricity and gas markets as well as emerging energy carriers (e.g., green hydrogen), alongside carbon-pricing mechanisms and climate policy instruments;
  • The analysis of smart cities as enabling ecosystems for the twin transition , focusing on data-driven governance and business models for energy, mobility, and waste management, including energy communities, demand response, and IoT/AI platforms.

This topic is particularly relevant to candidates interested in energy economics and management, innovation, entrepreneurship, and regional development. Proposals may focus on a single dimension or adopt an integrative perspective, and may target one or multiple geographic or industry contexts.

Candidates should provide detailed CV

Candidates must be eligible according to the criteria established by the 2026 MSCA Postdoctoral fellowship call:

  • to have up to 8 years of research experience after PhD.
  • to be citizens of an EU State or of an Associated Country.
