Job Description

Directs, plans, organizes, and evaluates infection prevention and control activities in a tertiary hospital setting.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead the Infection Prevention team by communicating effectively, developing staff, and building consensus for programs and goals that support the organization.
  • Develop and communicate a short-term strategic vision for infection prevention and control.
  • Implement and oversee hospital infection prevention goals, policies, and procedures, ensuring alignment with organizational standards; manage departmental budget, salaries, and capital expenditures.
  • Conduct infection surveillance and risk assessments according to guidelines; identify and address infection risks to patients, staff, and the community.
  • Investigate epidemiologically significant infections, clusters, and exposures; identify sources and implement risk reduction strategies.
  • Report operational performance, justifications, and corrective actions to hospital and system leadership, as well as local and state agencies.
  • Oversee infection prevention training programs covering standards of care, sterilization, disinfection, hand hygiene, and equipment management; manage and evaluate staff performance.
  • Ensure proper scheduling and responsibilities distribution; maintain compliance with regulations; participate in external reviews for accreditation.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships within and across departments to optimize patient care and compliance.
  • Partner with Human Resources to increase vaccination rates and improve exposure interventions; maintain accurate records.
  • Perform other related duties as required. All responsibilities are considered essential under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology, Public Health, Nursing, or related field required.
  • Current license as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State preferred.
  • Certification by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) required, plus any specialized certifications as needed.
  • 8-12 years of relevant experience required.
  • 7+ years of leadership / management experience required.
  • Additional Information

    Potential sign-on bonus of $10,000 for eligible candidates.

    The salary range is a good faith estimate and may be adjusted based on location, experience, education, credentials, and other factors.
