ABOUT THE ROLE – Deck Coating Inspector
We are looking for a Coating Inspector with experience in surface preparation, painting, and protective coating systems within the Oil & Gas or heavy industrial sector .
The selected candidate will report to the Deck Yard QC Superintendent and will be responsible for monitoring and inspecting all surface preparation and coating activities to ensure compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and client requirements .
This role is critical in preventing corrosion and ensuring the durability and integrity of structural and piping systems operating in harsh offshore and oil & gas environments.
Key Responsibilities
Inspection & Quality Control
- Inspect surface preparation activities including blasting, grinding, and cleaning.
- Monitor coating applications such as primers, intermediate coats, and multi-coat systems.
- Verify environmental conditions (humidity, temperature, dew point) before and during coating application.
- Conduct inspections using specialized tools such as DFT gauges, surface profile comparators, holiday detectors, and adhesion testers .
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain inspection records, test reports, batch certifications, and material traceability documentation .
- Prepare daily inspection reports, checklists, and Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) when required.
- Verify that coating systems meet the required Dry Film Thickness (DFT) and applicable standards (SSPC, NACE, ISO ).
Compliance & Standards
- Ensure all coating activities follow approved Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) , project specifications, and client requirements.
- Confirm the use of approved coating materials and verify expiry dates and proper storage conditions .
- Monitor blasting media cleanliness and surface profile in accordance with contractual specifications.
Coordination
- Coordinate with construction, QA/QC, and HSE teams to ensure coating activities align with project schedules and safety procedures.
- Interface with third-party inspectors and client representatives during hold points and witness inspections .
Safety & Environmental
- Ensure safety procedures are followed during blasting and painting operations , including confined space work and proper use of PPE .
- Monitor the handling and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with environmental regulations.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of industrial coating systems , including epoxy, polyurethane, zinc-rich primers, and fireproofing systems.
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards such as NACE, SSPC, ISO 12944, ASTM, and API standards .
- Proficiency in the use and calibration of coating inspection instruments .
- Strong reporting, communication, and coordination skills .
- High attention to detail with a strong quality and safety-oriented mindset .
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in coating inspection or related quality control roles.
- Excellent spoken and written English , including the ability to prepare technical reports and documentation.
