British American Tobacco Italy – Customs and Excise Manager (Trieste) Annual Gross Salary Pay Range: 56.300 - 70.434 € under B2-A3 Chemical-Pharmaceutical CLA level.
The Italy Customs and Excise Manager is accountable for customs and excise compliance matters and is expected to deliver all related external indirect tax compliance matters. This includes ensuring that a framework of controls, processes and governance is in place and implemented such that BAT’s operations are conducted in compliance with indirect taxes laws and regulations.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Oversight/monitoring of customs and excise classification, licensing, supporting documentation and records, filing of customs and excise returns/declarations and timely payment of customs and excise duties due (while increasing cash flow efficiency);
Performance checks, reviews and audits on the execution of tax policies, guidelines and standards implementation, including supervising performance metrics for technical compliance in indirect taxes, and ensuring post‑entry or declaration review of customs and excise formalities are completed and reviewed;
Delivery of all internal indirect taxes reporting requirements to aid compliance with SOX (relevant market/s), and internal and external destruction and waste reporting requirements (factory markets);
Maintaining a good working relationship with local tax, customs and excise authorities;
Supporting the Area Head in leading customs and excise audits in the market/s; leading all routine tax, customs and excise authority enquiries/requests for information;
Leading third‑party partners effectively to ensure their services follow tax regulations (customs brokers, logistics partners, warehousing companies);
Supporting assessment of customs and excise technology requirements, including ERP capabilities, and deployment of solutions and tools;
Providing specialist input into considerations of indirect tax compliance and risk matters; responsible for identifying indirect taxes law changes and assessing the impact; providing proactive support to the business on customs and excise matters, including new categories business model roll‑outs and advising on customs and excise risks and compliance requirements of projects such as route‑to‑market optimization and new product introductions;
Leading and reporting indirect tax risk, developing and deploying training to the business to aid in delivery of indirect taxes compliance and risk management; seeing opportunities and driving continuous improvement, challenging the status quo and managing external advisors;
Acting as a strong enforcer of ‘Do the Right Thing’; ensuring implementation of required instructions to the business from the indirect tax function (whether at global, area or local level) to run customs and excise compliance and governance; continuing professional development by keeping up to date with tax law proposals and changes, and educating team and other BAT colleagues.
What are we looking for?
Degree‑educated with professional accountancy/legal and/or tax qualifications;
Minimum of 5 years’ tax experience in the ‘big 4’ accounting firms, other equivalent multi‑national organizations, or customs and excise authority, or a relevant supply chain role;
Experience working with tax authorities, running tax audits and defending tax positions;
Excellent knowledge of local customs and excise laws and regulations; customs and excise technical, accounting and compliance knowledge;
Excellent understanding of manufacturing and supply‑chain environments;
Excellent partnership abilities and capability to build and manage relationships with tax authorities;
Ability to effectively lead third‑party partners in the delivery of their services in a tax‑compliant fashion (e.g., third‑party customs clearing agents/brokers, logistics partners, warehousing companies);
A thorough understanding and knowledge of relevant finance tools and systems and the ability to balance tax technical and commercial priorities;
Good communication skills, assertiveness and drive;
Excellent project‑ and time‑management skills and ability to work and keep to tight deadlines;
General knowledge of the SAP software package;
