We are looking for a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer for a long-term engagement at ESA ESTEC. Within the esacloud services portfolio, the role covers three main areas: onboarding and support to end users, administrative support and development of ESA’s internal provisioning platform (go.esa.int), and expansion of the esacloud infrastructure incorporating hyperconverged infrastructure, GPU compute, and hybrid cloud models.
About the client and location
The European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. As ESA’s largest test centre, it is responsible for the majority of space technology and spacecraft development through varying phases of production.
Tasks and activities
The scope of activities may include:
- Operating and maintaining the go.esa.int platform: infrastructure monitoring, capacity management, OS/application templates, and vCloud Director administration.
- Handling customer tickets, onboarding new users, and supporting workload migrations.
- Developing and maintaining platform tooling and automations (Python/Django, TypeScript/React, PostgreSQL, Ansible, GitLab CI).
- Expanding platform services (NetBackup, Isilon, Zerto, vROPS) and contribute to hybrid cloud architecture (VMware + Azure).
- Defining and implementing Proofs of Concept for new infrastructure services, including emerging GPU compute provisioning.
- Supporting the integration of customer applications and services running on esacloud into ESA IT network security policy.
- Definition of technical and service requirements for shared IT infrastructure projects in support of common or programme-dedicated services.
- Leading engineering for infrastructure projects implementation and release into operational service.
- Provision of architecture and expert advice for the definition of new services or improvement of existing services in the area of cloud and platform services.
Qualifications
The following skills and experience are mandatory:
- Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science or Engineering.
- Experience in cloud infrastructure or platform engineering in hybrid cloud environments.
- Expertise in Cloud & virtualisation: VMware vCloud Director, OpenStack, Azure, AWS, Bicep.
- Strong Knowledge of Containers & orchestration: Kubernetes, Docker, OpenShift, kubectl.
- Experience in Automation & development: Ansible, Terraform, GitLab CI, Python, Golang, Shell Scripting.
- Strong knowledge of Web development: TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL.
- Expertise in storage, backup & DR: Isilon, NetBackup, Zerto.
- Experience with Monitoring & OS: Zabbix, vROPS, RHEL, Ubuntu, Windows Server.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
