We are supporting a growing client in their search for an experienced Commissioning Engineer to oversee the full commissioning cycle of biogas and industrial process plants—from dry commissioning through performance testing and successful handover.


This role is ideal for a technically strong, hands-on engineer who can lead start-up activities, drive safety standards, coordinate site teams, and ensure projects meet performance, schedule, and cost expectations.


Objectives

The Commissioning Engineer will be responsible for managing and coordinating all commissioning activities from initial plant start-up through to biological commissioning, performance testing, and final acceptance.


A key focus is delivering projects safely, efficiently, and within agreed timelines and budgets.


Key Results Areas

  • Ensure planning, coordination, and seamless cooperation between the commissioning team and site operators.
  • Maintain the highest safety standards throughout start-up and operational phases.
  • Maintain or improve project budgets within the commissioning work scope.
  • Meet or exceed project schedules.
  • Achieve strong customer satisfaction at handover.
  • Deliver accurate, timely reporting and commissioning documentation.
  • Conduct risk analysis and implement mitigation measures during commissioning/start-up.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency or increase project value.
  • Ensure a smooth and professional handover to the client’s operational team, including robust operator training.


Core Responsibilities

  • Lead all commissioning activities from dry commissioning through final acceptance testing.
  • Analyse and understand contractual obligations related to commissioning scope.
  • Develop, estimate, and agree commissioning schedules and budgets.
  • Monitor functionality of all plant components throughout commissioning.
  • Coordinate internal teams, subcontractors, and vendors involved in commissioning activities.
  • Identify risks early and implement effective countermeasures.
  • Maintain professional communication with client representatives and site operators, aligned with the project communication plan.
  • Ensure all O&M manuals required for commissioning are completed and delivered on time.
  • Deliver operator training on safe and efficient daily operation.
  • Manage component testing and ensure all test protocols are prepared and executed.
  • Provide feedback and lessons learned to engineering and project teams.
  • Prepare and submit all commissioning reports as per agreed reporting requirements.


Safety & Quality Responsibilities

  • Apply and enforce all company safety, quality, and environmental rules throughout commissioning.
  • Ensure all personnel involved in commissioning activities receive appropriate training.
  • Report any safety breaches and request work stoppage in cases of severe risk.
  • Ensure accuracy of all reported data and adherence to all contractual deadlines.


Job Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Degree or technical diploma in: Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering or Chemical Engineering
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Site Manager or Commissioning Engineer in industrial, biogas, waste-treatment, or process plant construction.


Technical Competencies

  • Strong ability to read and interpret technical documents: P&IDs, electrical diagrams, mechanical drawings, control narratives, cause–effect charts, etc.
  • Broad knowledge across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and process/biological systems.
  • Skilled in training operators and enforcing safety standards.
  • Experience coordinating resources and subcontractors.
  • Capable of building and managing detailed commissioning schedules.
  • Familiarity with industrial control systems (e.g., SCADA, DCS).
  • Experience working under ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45000 environments.
  • Solid understanding of anaerobic digestion, waste treatment, and/or water treatment facilities.
  • Strong Italian (if required for location) and good written/spoken English.


Desirable:

  • Industry-specific biogas commissioning experience.
