We are seeking an experienced BESS Project Engineer to support the development and execution of utility-scale standalone and hybrid (BESS + PV/Wind) projects, primarily in Italy and Spain. Reporting to the Engineering Manager and working closely with internal teams and external partners, this role will take ownership of technical design, engineering coordination, and technical support across the full project lifecycle—from development through execution and commissioning.
Location : Rome (preferred), Madrid or Dublin
Key Responsibilities
Project Design, Development, and Execution :
- Lead the technical design and sizing of utility-scale BESS projects (>10 MW), ensuring alignment with grid requirements, operational objectives, local regulations, and HSE standards.
- Develop and optimize system configurations, including evaluation of system performance parameters such as usable energy, round-trip efficiency, and auxiliary consumption at the point of interconnection.
- Prepare and review engineering deliverables, including BESS layouts, single-line diagrams, and technical documentation using tools such as AutoCAD.
- Support technical submissions for regulatory approvals and participation in public and private tender processes, including Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) and storage-specific auctions (e.g., MACSE in Italy).
- Define and compare alternative technical solutions, optimizing plant configuration, component selection, and overall design to achieve the best technical and economic outcomes, evaluating and designing hybrid configuration when possible.
- Contribute to preliminary CapEx and OpEx estimates and support project cost optimization.
- Coordinate with external engineering consultants and internal stakeholders to review, validate, and finalize engineering deliverables.
Technical Due Diligence and Investment Support
- Perform technical due diligence for greenfield and M&A opportunities, acting on both buy-side and sell-side transactions when required.
- Coordinate technical inputs across internal departments to support project progression through the aimed M&A process.
- Support the definition of technical and commercial concepts aligned with project business models and revenue strategies.
- Contribute to financial and risk assessments by providing technical inputs for cost estimates, risk identification, and sensitivity analysis.
- Ensure compliance with applicable grid codes, permitting requirements, and regulatory frameworks in Spain and Italy.
BESS Technology and Application Expertise:
- Apply in-depth knowledge of battery technologies (primarily Li-ion, with exposure to alternative chemistries considered an advantage), as well as EMS/BMS and power conversion systems.
- Evaluate and support implementation of key storage use cases, including frequency regulation, energy arbitrage, peak shaving, backup power, and grid-forming/grid-support functions.
- Monitor emerging storage technologies and system architectures and assess their applicability to the company’s project portfolio.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a related discipline. Master’s degree is a plus.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the energy sector, including at least 3 years of direct experience in BESS engineering, design, or project delivery roles.
- Direct experience with utility-scale storage projects in Spain and/or Italy is strongly preferred. Experience with MACSE or similar capacity mechanisms is a plus.
- Strong understanding of BESS system architecture, including batteries, EMS/BMS, PCS, thermal systems, and grid interconnection requirements.
- Familiarity with HV, MV, and LV electrical systems and related equipment.
- Experience with technical due diligence, engineering coordination, and technical support for project financing or investment processes is an advantage.
- Ability to prepare CapEx and OpEx estimates.
- Proficiency with engineering and office tools such as AutoCAD, QGIS, and MS Office.
- Strong organizational and project coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders.
- Proactive and self-driven mindset, with the ability to work independently in a fast-growing organization.
- Ability to work effectively in multicultural and geographically distributed teams.
- Fluent English required. Italian and Spanish highly desirable based on the location.
- Willingness to travel within Italy, Spain and occasionally internationally for site visits, technical meetings, and project support.
