Job title

Battery Materials Scientist – Polymer Innovation

As a Battery Material Scientist, you will contribute to the design and optimization of next-generation polymer binders and formulations for advanced lithium-based batteries. You will combine a deep understanding of polymer chemistry with experimental work and cross-functional collaboration to accelerate product innovation in the energy storage field. You will combine your scientific curiosity and leadership with experimentation, transforming polymer chemistry insights into real advances in battery performance and sustainability.

Overview and Responsibilities

  • Promote a strong safety culture within the group/organization and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Provide scientific insight and support to project teams. Provide scientific guidance and mentorship to junior colleagues. Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment.
  • Collaborate closely with Battery Application, Polymer Development, Analytical, Commercial Frontline, and Application Laboratories teams to:
    • Support the development of new PVDF-based binders elucidating structure–performance correlations in battery systems.
    • Identify new opportunities, also beyond the classical PVDF cathode binder structures.
    • Design and coordinate structured experimental plans to uncover binder performance levers across various cathode formulations.
  • Coordinate the day-to-day lab work with the support of dedicated laboratory technicians
  • Monitor and understand the intellectual property landscape in experimental areas, including reviewing industry literature to provide relevant ideas to the polymer development teams, filing invention disclosures, and collaborating with patent attorneys on new filings, defending existing patents, and challenging competitive patents with sound scientific data.

Requirements

  • Education: M.D. in Physical Chemistry, Chemistry, Engineering, Material or Polymer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: Ideally 4+ years of experience in applied research or product development in materials science, polymers, or related fields. Experience in battery materials, dispersions, or coatings would be a plus.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Solid knowledge of physical chemistry of materials and preferably on interactions of polymers with inorganic surfaces & particles.
    • Ability to analyze scientific literature and patents identifying valuable information
    • Ability to design, and interpret results of, analytical and application tests on polymers and dispersions of inorganic particles, e.g. binders, cathode slurries and electrodes.
    • Familiarity with analytical techniques applicable to the assessment of polymer properties and interactions with inorganic surfaces
  • Soft Skills:
    • Ability to influence people without direct authority.
    • Ability to coordinate or monitor activities across multiple teams
    • Ability to interact directly and autonomously with multiple functions across the organization
    • Strong teamwork abilities.
