The EIB , the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for its Legal Directorate (JU) - EU Operations Department - (OPS-EU) – Northern Europe Division (NE) – Austria and Germany Unit (AT-DE) a Banking and Finance Lawyer (German speaker preferred).

This is a full‑time position at grade 5 for which the EIB offers a permanent contract.

Purpose

The Northern Europe Division (NE) deals with legal documentation and legal issues for projects in Northern Europe, i.e. in Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden and the EFTA countries. The Lawyer will assist the Head of Division and Head of Department, together with other legal advisers, in providing legal support to the operational directorates, carrying out work related to all tasks within the remit of the division. This position offers you the opportunity to contribute to EIB’s business in the Division’s countries of operations and to support primarily transactions in Austria and Germany.

Operating Network

You will act under the general authority of the Head of Division and the Head of Unit, in cooperation with the other colleagues of the Division and in accordance with the established priorities. The post may involve a certain amount of travel for negotiations and signatures of legal documentation and contracts.

Accountabilities

Responsibilities

  • Draft and negotiate legal documentation for lending and financing operations for:
    • projects in the aforementioned countries, notably bilateral loans with banking counterparts, public entities and major corporates
    • project finance operations, with the assistance from external legal counsels
    • structured finance operations, including securitisations
    • other forms of financing, including risk‑sharing structures, on a funded and unfunded basis
  • Provide legal advisory support, conclude contracts, complete all related legal formalities, and conduct legal monitoring (including loan restructuring and other post‑signature events)
  • Manage contacts and negotiations
  • Prepare the terms of reference for external counsel and other consultants, liaise and supervise their work, whenever necessary
  • Complete administrative formalities vis‑à‑vis clients which have a legal nature or have legal implications
  • Undertake research and conduct legal studies on issues of law arising in connection with EIB's operations and in the context of developing new financial instruments/templates
  • Develop and maintain relationships within EIB, its clients and external legal advisers, and represent EIB externally

Qualifications

  • University degree in law, minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor and preferably at Master level, and preferably qualified in German or Austrian law
  • Minimum 5 years and preferably not more than 15 years of professional experience relevant for the job in the field of bank lending and/or project finance and/or capital markets, preferably acquired with a law firm of international repute or the in‑house legal department of a financial institution
  • Knowledge of civil and commercial law of a jurisdiction relevant to the work of the Division would be an asset
  • Significant experience in drafting and negotiating finance documents in English; experience in drafting and negotiating finance documents in German would be an advantage
  • Experience in structured finance and/or project finance/PPP transactions would be an advantage
  • Very good knowledge of standard computer tools
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French (*** ) with a good command of the other. Capacity to draft and negotiate in German would be a distinct advantage
