Job Overview

A Joint Venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), Thales Alenia Space is a global space manufacturer delivering high‑tech solutions for telecommunications, navigation, Earth Observation, environmental management, exploration, science and orbital infrastructures. We are looking for an Avionics Engineer - IVVQ.

The job holder will be in charge of the different phases of Avionics testing: Integration, Verification and Validation/Qualification of Satellite Avionics (Data Handling, Attitude and Orbit Control, and Failure Detection Isolation and Recovery). The role includes developing simulation models for Satellite Real Time Environment (RTE) based on C/C++ compliant with ESA ECSS SMP standard.

Key Responsibilities

  • Real/No‑Real Time test environment for Hardware In the Loop (HIL) Testing
  • Real Time Environment (RTE) Simulation modeling based on C/C++ compliant with ECSS SMP standard
  • Matlab/Simulink programming
  • Support to hardware unit specification and technical management of related procurement
  • Study and understand the design provided by AOCS/DHC Design Authority to develop a verification and testing approach
  • Develop and write test sequences for AOCS, DHC, and FDIR aspects
  • Avionics V&V activity at Avionic Test Bench (ATB) level

Location & Working Conditions

The working site is Rome, but other locations may be required for short mid‑term periods. Short periods of 24‑hour shift working across the full week may be required upon specific program needs.

Education and Experience

You have a Master’s Degree in Electrical/Computer/Control Engineering, with an explicit focus on programming, Hardware In the Loop Testing and Control Systems Engineering.

You are fluent in English (C1 and above certification) both listening and reading. It is preferable that you have at least 2‑3 years of experience in a similar position.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies
  • Avionic sensors and actuators technology
  • Experience with real/no‑real time test environments (HIL Testing)
  • Experience with SW or hybrid (HW/SW) simulators
  • Matlab/Simulink programming
  • C/C++ programming
  • Knowledge of ESA technical standard
  • Data Handling Hardware (On Board Computer, Remote Terminal Unit, GNSS receiver, microprocessors)
  • Technical experience with Avionic requirements of a Satellite (plus)
  • Technical experience on Avionic EGSE elements and development on Spacecraft simulator (plus)
  • Ability to use laboratory instruments such as oscilloscope, multimeter, protocol analyser
  • Ability to work independently and in a team in an international environment
  • Ability to cope with workload pressures
  • Knowledge of quality process and procedures
