About The Role

Nature Materials is seeking an Associate or Senior Editor to join the editorial team. The candidate should have a background in biomedical engineering or biomaterials, with openness to candidates from all areas of materials science. The role is based in Shanghai, Beijing, Milan or Pune and is offered on a permanent basis.

The successful candidate will report to the Chief Editor of Nature Materials and may collaborate with other Nature Portfolio journals as needed. Responsibilities and journal assignments may evolve over time in response to portfolio needs.

This is a demanding, intellectually stimulating role.

Responsibilities

• Handle original research papers and work with editor teams on editorial processes, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
• Make well-reasoned editorial decisions based on expert advice.
• Contribute to content and strategy for Nature Materials and Nature Portfolio.
• Commission, edit content such as Reviews, Perspectives, News & Views, Comments, or write Editorials.
• Liaise with editors at other journals in the Nature family and with international researchers.
• Attend conferences and visit research institutions.

Qualifications

• A PhD or equivalent in materials science or a related field.
• Additional research experience is valuable but not required.
• Strong understanding of recent trends and developments in the field.
• Passion for science and breadth of interest across scientific research, both within and beyond one's specialty.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including fluent English (written and spoken).
• Ability to assess novelty, context and implications of submissions from various areas of the discipline.
• Willingness to travel and engage with scientists worldwide.
• Editorial experience is not required, but applicants with editorial experience may be considered for Senior Editor positions.
