The American University of Rome invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Archaeology, beginning Fall 2026, who will serve as the program director of the MA in Cultural Heritage: Sustainability and Community and teach in both the graduate program as well as the university’s BA in Archaeology & Classics.

The person appointed will contribute to the further growth of the MA program by working closely with the faculty and administration to oversee the program, update the curriculum, teach and mentor students, and raise the program’s academic profile by actively engaging with external stakeholders and pursuing various scholarly and research activities.


Requirements:

•  Ph.D. in Archaeology or related field

•  Experience teaching in an American university context.

•  Administrative experience in an academic setting.

•  Record of scholarly research and publication.

•  Familiarity with course instructional technologies and online course management systems.

•  A strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels in a small-class environment with active learning techniques.

•  Experience supervising student theses.

•  Excellent oral and written English.


Desirable Characteristics:

•   Experience in an American liberal-arts environment.

•   International experience.

•   Preferred areas of specialization: 

1)     Forensic geo-archaeology

2)     Heritage crime

3)     Use of advanced technologies such as remote sensing, geophysics, GIS, and artificial intelligence for heritage conservation, diagnostics, and the prevention of crimes against cultural property.


Responsibilities:

•  Teach courses in both the graduate and undergraduate programs.

•  Oversee the graduate program by serving as Program Director.

•  Advise and monitor the progress of students; advise student clubs related to the discipline.

•  Serve the University through membership on committees and other normal faculty functions.

•   Maintain and pursue active research and/or professional agenda.

•   Contribute to the development of an innovative, state-of-the-art program and curriculum.

•   Contribute to the organization and promotion of the program and its activities (e.g., seminars, conferences and publications).

•   Engage in networking activities in Italy and Europe; and show capacity, knowledge, and/or willingness to attract resources (e.g., visiting professors; partnerships with NGOs, humanitarian organizations, and/or companies).
