What We Are Looking For

The Integration of the planetary biogeochemical and industrial carbon cycle (ICC) program at CMCC is looking for a Scientific Project Manager, capable of effectively liaising with multiple research teams within CMCC as well as external stakeholders, including researchers, administrators, and partners. The role requires strong operational management experience and the ability to prioritize tasks and solve problems efficiently.

About The ICC Program

The Integration of the planetary biogeochemical and industrial Carbon Cycle (ICC) Program is one of four strategic research programs within CMCC, focusing on understanding and shaping the new paradigm of building a net‑zero carbon economy. It provides quantitative and narrative analyses of socio‑economic systems in a sustainable and resilient future.

Role

The Scientific Project Manager reports to the ICC Program Director and is responsible for the smooth running of the projects and working groups within the Program and related day‑to‑day operations, in close collaboration with the CMCC research institutes and programs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic support to the Program Director and working groups, contributing to the development and implementation of research objectives, initiatives, and deliverables (strategic documents, presentations, policy briefs, etc.).
  • Facilitate stakeholder coordination, communicating and collaborating among internal and external stakeholders such as researchers, administrators, and funding bodies.
  • Manage project administrative tasks, prepare and monitor the project budget, and allocate resources in coordination with the Scientific and Administration Managers.
  • Ensure compliance with internal regulations and policies; prepare reports and documentation as required by funding agencies or governing bodies.
  • Identify operational challenges and proactively implement solutions, making data‑driven decisions to optimize efficiency and effectiveness of the research program.
  • Continuously evaluate and refine administrative processes and procedures to streamline operations and enhance overall effectiveness.
  • Coordinate fundraising strategy, mapping funding sources in collaboration with the Fundraising Office and aligning with the financial plan of the three institutes.

Requirements

  • PhD in Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Climatology, Geosciences, Biogeochemistry or equivalent subjects.
  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in a research field.
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language.
  • Accuracy and strong analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of European, national, and regional funding programs.
  • Strong focus on research objectives.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage personnel effectively.
  • Proven capability to plan, organize, and supervise research activities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Scientific familiarity with global carbon cycle monitoring, modeling, and management, including climate change solutions and interventions.

Duration, Compensation & Benefits

  • This opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The Scientific Project Manager will be based in Milan’s CMCC office.
  • Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience.
  • Welfare package for a minimum of 12‑month contract.
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.

  • The position is available for an immediate start.
